Admissions
To apply, students:
- Have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university,
- Take the GRE within 5 years preceding application, and
- Meet at least one of the following criteria:
a) A graduate degree earned from a regionally accredited university.
b) At least a “B” average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) on all work as an upper
division student seeking a bachelor’s degree.
c) A combined Verbal + Quantitative score of 1000 or higher on the GRE that is mandatory for all applicants. All applicants must submit GRE Scores.
Applicants will be selected for admission on a competitive basis based on the following:
- GPA on all work as an upper division student seeking a bachelor’s degree.
- Verbal + Quantitative scores on the GRE
- Three letters of recommendation addressing applicant’s ability to do graduate work.
- Sample of written work indicating applicant’s writing, research, or critical thinking
skills. This sample
should consist of at least three typed pages on a topic related to criminology or
the applicant’s undergraduate major.
- A Statement of Purpose, highlighting the applicant's credentials and indicating his/her (a) reasons for seeking the M.A.
degree, (b) areas of interest in criminology/criminal justice, and (c) future career
plans.
International applicants will, as applicable, show proof of language proficiency.

Process:
All applicants must complete the FACTS Online Graduate Application.
For information on the GRE, go to www.ets.org/gre.
You will take the "General Test" and direct your official scores to USF Criminology; our institution code is
R5828 and our department is 2202. Allow adequate time after you take the test for
these scores to reach USF.
All of the following materials will be sent directly to the Graduate Director, Lorie
Fridell, at the address provided below:
- Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate level studies.
- Three letters of recommendation
- Writing Sample
- Statement of purpose
- Proof of language proficiency (for relevant international students only)
